Dharma Talk
A dharma talk is often thought of as a talk ON “the dharma”. A talk that recounts doctrine, precepts, and dogma. Yet this is not dharma. Truth cannot be spoken OF or about. Yet we will speak. Truth cannot be captured in any way, least of all in a set of ideas. Yet we will try. We will engage in our humanity. This is not a mistake that needs correcting.
It is not possible to speak about the truth. All that is spoken and recounted will be an echo. To listen to a teaching often becomes an act of acquiring knowledge. It is an act that may appease the mind and ego, the tools that enjoy being made the most of. Yet the act and implementation of any tool that we identify with cannot fully meet all of what is. The truth, the dharma, lies beyond the scope of the mind/ego. We cannot meet it fully from this perspective or from any perspective that we may take.
There is no prescription regarding the truth. On where to get it, how to live it, do it, be it. We keep looking for a script, there isn’t one. We like dogmas, precepts, commandments, paths, practices. They give us a ‘what to do’ and’ how to do it’ sense. These ways are not at all right or wrong. They just are. Something to do. They give A direction.
It is not possible to gain anything from the truth.
